TO_AITION at the ESC Congress 2025: Demonstrating the TO_AITION Cloud Risk Stratification Platform for Cardiovascular Disease and Depression

Updated: 17 hours ago

This year’s ESC Congress 2025, held together with the World Congress of Cardiology in Madrid, brought together thousands of cardiovascular professionals from around the globe to explore how cutting-edge science can transform patient care. Within this vibrant setting, TO_AITION highlighted how data-driven research can be translated into practical tools for clinicians, through a dedicated focus on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression comorbidity.

On Sunday, 31 August, Dr. Antonis Sakellarios from our partner UOI presented the TO_AITION cloud risk stratification platform during a live, hands-on demonstration at the ESC/TO_AITION booth. The demo allowed cardiologists, psychiatrists, researchers and other healthcare professionals to explore an integrated, web-based environment designed to help them better understand and manage the complex two-way relationship between cardiovascular disease and depression.

The platform is one of the key innovations emerging from TO_AITION. By combining advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and multi-level data, from clinical indicators and risk factors to immune-metabolic and other biomarker information, the project aims to improve risk stratification, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment support for patients living with both conditions.

In addition to the booth demonstration, the TO_AITION cloud platform was the focus of an ESC TV Connect Special Session, chaired by Dr. Jasmin Mujkanovic (Rigshospitalet – Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark). During this session, Dr. Sakellarios walked the audience through the rationale behind the platform, its architecture and data flows, and real-world use cases illustrating how clinicians might use it to support decision-making in patients with combined cardiovascular and mental health needs. The discussion underlined the potential of the platform to bring research outputs directly into clinical pathways, supporting more personalised and holistic care.

For those who were not able to attend ESC Congress 2025 in person, the recording of the ESC TV Connect session is available in the video embedded with this article. The session offers a concise overview of how the platform works, how it can be used in daily practice, and how it fits within the broader scientific goals of the TO_AITION project.

We would like to thank our partner, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), for supporting these TO_AITION activities at the ESC Congress 2025. We are especially grateful to Dr Antonis Sakellarios, Dr Jasmin Mujkanovic and ESC team members Alejandro Puigrefagut Pla, Guillaume Damasco and Celestine Sonia Matsinkou Feutu for making these sessions a success.

As TO_AITION moves towards completion, the project continues to refine its analytical models, validate biomarkers and develop tools such as the cloud risk stratification platform to support earlier diagnosis, better monitoring and more targeted interventions for CVD–depression comorbidity. The experience at ESC Congress 2025 in Madrid marks an important step in bringing these innovations closer to the clinicians and patients who stand to benefit from them.
