The group of Prof. Winfried März and Dr. Marcus Kleber primarily works on biochemical and genetic risk markers of cardiovascular disease.

The proposed work for TO_AITION will be primarily based upon data from the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) study. LURIC aims to provide a well-defined resource for the study of environmental and genetic risk factors and their interactions as well as the study of functional relationships between gene variation and biochemical phenotype (functional genomics) or response to medication (pharmacogenomics). The study consists of more than 3,300 Caucasian patients hospitalized for coronary angiography between 1997 and 2000 at a tertiary care center in Southwestern Germany who have so far been followed-up for 20 years. Based on data from the LURIC study, algorithms to estimate the risk of cardiovascular mortality have been developed in the past (VILCAD score, CoroPredict). These algorithms will be extended and improved and prediction models for depression and cardiovascular disease-depression comorbidity will be developed.
