TO AITION Podcast: Rethinking Cardiovascular Diseases and Depression as Linked Conditions

In this episode of the CardioTalk – Latest Research podcast series, the TO_AITION Project explores a paradigm shift in understanding cardiovascular diseases and depression. Instead of treating these conditions as independent clinical entities, the discussion reframes them as interconnected, with overlapping immunological, biological, and systemic mechanisms that contribute to their comorbidity.

Professor Evangelos Andreakos, TO_AITION Coordinator and Head of the Immunology Lab at BRFAA, discusses the project’s approach to investigating immune mechanisms and experimental disease models, while also explaining how disease networks are used to predict phenotypes and uncover causal relationships between cardiovascular and mental health conditions.

Assistant Professor Antonis Sakellarios (University of Patras, Greece) representing partner University of Ioannina describes how advanced techniques in biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, multiscale modelling, and intelligent information systems are applied to support integrated, data-driven discovery within TO_AITION. Their combined efforts illustrate how interdisciplinary research can move healthcare from fragmented disease management toward precision, mechanism-driven strategies that address both cardiovascular and mental health outcomes.
